A third-class city in the Cebu province, Talisay (6045) got its name from Magtalisay trees that surround the entire city before (shown above). Since 2010, it already reached the population of 200, 000 Talisaynons, having a density of 5,000/sq km (13,000/sq mi). This area measuring 39.87 sq km (15.39 sq mi) is also part of Metropolitan Cebu.
It is composed of 90% Roman Catholics with 9% other Christian denomination (Protestants) and 1% Muslims.
Talisay City, which used to be an Augustinian estate by 1648, became a municipality with Silverio Fernandez (the first gobernadorcillo) and Pedro Labuca (the first kapitan) in 1849. It served as haven for colonial forces during the American and Japanese occupations. It was the center of guerilla intelligence operations for the Philippine residence movement in Cebu during the World War II. In the 26th of March 1945, the returning American forces had their historic landing in Talisay beach, which marked the surrender of Japanese forces in Cebu. This event is annually celebrated until now, headed by the provincial government of Cebu. Talisay also became a component city by virtue of Republic Act 1879 on the 30th of December, 2000.
Its mission is to promote and sustain environmental balance, economic stability and social equity for the welfare of its empowered citizenry while its vision states an environmentally sustainable Aqua City with happy empowered citizenry working towards a peaceful and progressive community in a diversified economy guided by dynamic and efficient local leadership.
Hon. Johnny V. De los Reyes is its current mayor while Hon. Romeo Villarante is its current vice-mayor.
Barangay Tabunok has much of the commerce in Talisay, where several public markets, strip malls and commercial establishments are found. It was called as the south "gateway" to Cebu City. The South Road Properties, a 4-lane coastal highway from downtown Cebu City to the town of Minglanilla has many exits to many of the areas in Talisay. This helped in reducing the traffic and at the same time, transforming the city a popular zone for housing as it was in the early 70's and 80's.
